Akpabom is a community with GPS Coordinates N04°35.091′, E007°50.111′ located in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State Nigeria.
The Community is approximately 90minutes away from Uyo and 20 minutes away from Eket City.
Akpabom has fishing, agriculture, and petty commercial activities as its prevailing economic driver.
The community has a total estimated population density of about 250 houses.
The community has a school, health center, market, poor telecommunication coverage, and churches as social amenities while lacking portable water access (no longer functional).
The predominant means of transportation within the community is majorly by foot or motorbike.
Quite a handful of the inhabitants have access to electricity through petrol generators while the others are at the mercy of kerosene lamps, candle lamps, firewood, etc.
The average cost of petrol in Akpabom is N200.00 (38% costlier than the open market rate) while the average cost of kerosene is N250 (300% costlier than the open market rate).
The major challenge facing economic development in the community is the lack of electricity access for residential and commercial activities most importantly for the processing of agro-produces before taking them to the market.
This 100kW PV solar was co-financed by the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), GVE’s impact investor “All On”, and the Akwa Ibom State government.
Other project impacts include:
• 22 Nos Street lighting points along the main street of Akpabom
• Enhanced security at night
• Extended business operating hours
• Children gather around the street lighting points to study/ play at night.
• 40% reduction in Energy related expenditure.
• 68% reduction in malaria cases.
